In April 2018, the Pollution Research Group (PRG) at the University of KwaZulu-Natal appointed BORDA South Africa to operate and maintain the Newlands Mashu Demonstration and Research DEWATS Site (NLM) on behalf of eThekwini Water and Sanitation (EWS). Lloyd Govender manages the operations for BORDA South Africa, with all activities performed by full-time site technicians, Musa Mtshali and Hensford Mzimela.
Operation and maintenance tasks include removing scum from the settling chamber of the anaerobic baffle reactor, landscaping, measurement taking, and supporting the agricultural and engineering students with research projects on site. Additionally, Musa and Hensford support administrative and safety control mechanisms, ensuring that the site is presentable and welcoming to local, national, and international visitors and researchers.
BORDA South Africa is grateful for the opportunity to work closely with partners at PRG and EWS in showcasing a well-run DEWATS, thanks to dedication of a hard-working technical site team.
