Documentary: DEWATS for Dar
Lessons learnt from implementing decentralised faecal sludge management (FSM) in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania – A new 15-minute documentary released in July 2020 presents the key findings of the four-year “DEWATS for Dar” project, which was implemented by BORDA Tanzania and Ifakara Health Institute (IHI) between 2016-2020.
This goal of this project was to improve access to sanitation services in low-income, unplanned areas of Dar es Salaam without connection to the sewerage networks. Within this project, two decentralised faecal sludge treatment plants were constructed, and a team of professional service providers was established to empty pits and transport sludge to nearby treatment facilities. These trained operators now provide safe, affordable and improved methods of pit-emptying, using innovative equipment and small-scale vehicles, which can provide services even in the most inaccessible and highly congested urban areas.
This project was funded by UKAID through the Human Development Innovation Fund (HDIF) and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
