Promoting Community-Based Agriculture
The Food Security project is part of the special initiative "One World No Hunger" carried out from 2016-2021 by BORDA and our partners in Mali: Association for Development in Arid Zones (ADAZ) in Timbuktu and Gourma-Rharous, Harmony for Development in the Sahel (HDS) in Dogon Country, and the NGO Réussir la Décentralisation (RLD) in Bamako. Funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), the project covers the cercles (prefectures) of Timbuktu, Gourma-Rharous and Bandiagara and aims to strengthen the most vulnerable populations by restoring their means of agricultural production and enabling women to generate household income through farming.
Through an integrated, multi-sectoral approach, the project supports agricultural community based organisations (CBOs) in their efforts to overcome the losses in food production caused by the security crisis in Mali. The interventions aim to rehabilitate and improve degraded, low-yielding, partially barren land so that it can be used for cultivation.
The target groups in rural areas are agricultural producers and residents benefitting from improved sanitation. Other target groups include local governments, engineering offices, consultants, technical managers, public and private services and training institutions which are targeted as part of the project’s educational and counselling measures.
The project has four objectives:
- Increase the capacity of the rural advisory centre
- Increase and secure agricultural production
- Increase the production and productivity of animals
- Increase the income of women's associations
Transparency, participation, collaboration
BORDA cooperates closely with local NGOs who are active in the project intervention areas. The approach is developed in consultation with farmers, cooperatives, partners, government entities, civil society and the media. The involvement of all stakeholders ensures the sustainability of project actions. Continuity is ensured by follow-up meetings. Stakeholder gatherings are organised by two different committees: CROCSADs (regional committee for orientation, coordination and monitoring of development actions) and CLOCSAD (local committee for orientation, coordination and monitoring of development actions).
Implementation of solutions, sustainability
Groups of producers participating in the project are advised on cultivation techniques, and on the organisation and development of economically and sustainably managed agriculture.
The project will contribute to the security and diversification of agricultural production, to the increase in quantity produced, to the food supply of the local population, and to the improvement of the family incomes of women.
Agricultural land will be protected in the long term by erosion control measures, water points will be improved and rehabilitated, and the management of small market gardening areas (PPM) will be improved by the FCBOs (female community based organisations).
