Aid to strengthen local production capacities in Timbuktu and Mopti
The multidimensional crisis unleashed in Mali in 2012, as well as the food insecurity caused by extreme weather phenomena resulting from climate change, have greatly destabilised and weakened communities. This has aggravated existing socioeconomic challenges and fuelled increased migration, hunger, unemployment, poverty and scarcity of natural resources.
In this context, the Transitional Aid project was initiated by BORDA and our partners as an immediate response aimed at strengthening the local production capacities of vulnerable populations, enabling them to reduce food insecurity, improve household income and better manage land disputes.
The project is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) for a period of 4.5 years, starting in 2019, and benefits displaced populations from 25 communes in the regions of Timbuktu and Mopti.
Transparency, participation and collaboration
To reach the target groups, BORDA has established reliable working relationships with strongly rooted local NGOs such as ADAZ (Association for Development in Arid Zones), HDS (Harmony of Development in the Sahel) and RLD (Network for Successful Decentralisation).
In the two regions, the project is anchored by orientation and coordination committees for development actions, involves municipalities in the design of local measures, and connects actors with state representatives in the districts.
Requests for support are reviewed and validated by evaluation committees (made up of all the stakeholders) set up for this purpose at the level of each intervention cercle (prefecture).
Implementation of solutions and ensuring sustainability
Project measures are integrated into sectoral development policy and are coordinated with the economic, social and cultural development plans of the partner municipalities (PDSEC).
The project relies on community based organisations (CBOs) for effective, participatory and sustainable management of project actions. The CBOs are involved in all phases of the project, from diagnosis to preparation, planning and implementation, monitoring and evaluation of actions. This involvement strengthens the capacities of the CBOs, facilitates the ownership of the project by the communities, and guarantees the sustainability of the actions.
The targeting of beneficiaries takes into consideration gender specificities and inclusion, allowing the participation of all without discrimination.
This project will help reduce poverty and ensure food security by promoting sustainable agriculture, reducing land disputes, and integrating young people, women and people with disabilities into the economic life of their communities.
