Construction of Mburahati FSTP (HDIF/BORDA), Dar es Salaam, Tanzania

Construction is underway on the Faecal Sludge Treatment Plant (FSTP) in Mburahati ward, Temeke Municipality in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, which is being implemented as part of the UKAID "Human Development Innovation Fund” (HDIF) Project. This treatment facility will consist of a bio-digester, anaerobic baffle reactor, expansion chambers and sludge drying beds, to treat the sludge deposited here from Mburahati community and neighbouring areas. These areas are low-income, densely populated, and with no sewerage connections to the centralised network. This means that wastewater and faecal sludge is often illegally dumped into the environment, leading to public health risks such as regular cholera outbreaks. In addition to the construction of the FSTP, BORDA will also establish a local service provider who will hygienically and efficiently empty household pit-latrines and septic tanks, and transport the contents to the treatment facility. Treated wastewater will then be used to irrigate the vegetation around the perimeter of the site, as well as trees which will be planted around the adjacent football field, to improve the immediate urban surroundings. Construction is scheduled for completion by the end of April 2018.
