The purpose of the project was to increase the levels of stakeholders understanding and commitment, and to strengthen the overall enabling environment for sanitation and in particular Feacal Sludge Management (FSM) in Dar es Salaam. The project aimed to contribute to develop the basis of an inclusive and equitable approach to urban sanitation in Tanzania that recognizes the critical importance of sanitation in informal urban settlements. In addition, it aimed to train representatives from LGAs and Public Utilities how innovative off grid solution can provide affordable access to sanitation to low income households.
This could be achieved by bring together stakeholders from the water, sanitation, health and financial public and private sectors, with the aim of achieving a common level of understanding on Faecal Sludge Management (FSM) and to develop approaches on developing the sanitation and city planning sector. Advocacy and information materials were developed to support this process. This was achieved in 3 phases:
During the kick-off workshop and the coordination meetings five working groups were formulated to discuss challenges and driver for FSM in the Dar es Salaam context:
Taking measurements for construction of the new garden in Dodoma's Nyerere Square
The site of the new garden in Nyerere Square
Irrigation pipes for reusing treated greywater
At an outreach event, urban children learn about nature
Illustrating nature's benefits at an outreach event
From January to August 2019 BORDA Tanzania facilitated the “Fecal Sludge Management (FSM) Capacity Development (CD) for Dar es Salaam (DAR)” project. This aimed to support the development of an enabling environment for scaling up FSM in Dar es Salaam.
